Recession: 'SA's recovery does little for average consumer'

An economist says while coming out of the recession is a step in the right direction for South Africa - it's just not enough.
Stats SA announced that the country's economy grew by 2,5% in the second quarter of this year - following two quarters of contractions.

Economist, Dawie Roodt says the GDP figures will not necessarily translate into a positive impact for South Africans.
"I'm afraid it's not going to have much of an impact on the average South African given that the growth potential and growth trajectory of the economy is still quite weak. So, we expect a continuation in the increase in poverty and unemployment. We need to grow this economy much stronger for longer before we can really talk about an improvement for the average South African," he says.
