Recent rains fail to make dent
Updated | By Zongile Mthimkhulu
Water officials in the province say the rains over the past few days have done very little to assist the drought situation in KwaZulu-Natal.

Utility Umgeni Water says Hazelmere Dam is currently sitting at around 30% capacity.
Spokesperson Shami Harichunder says the dam's catchment areas only received about 8 millimetres of rainfall, which is not enough to make a noticeable difference.
''All that has occurred is that is that the rainfall received has just soaked into the ground and there's been no run-off water. As Umgeni Water we are still transferring water from the uThongathi River into Hazelmere Dam in the region of about 8-million litres a day."
''If we did not have this transfer scheme, the situation at Hazelmere Dam would have been dire,'' he said.
Harichunder says water restrictions that have been effected in parts of the province remain in place. Hazelmere Dam provides water to the eThekwini and Ilembe Municipalities, as well as to Sembcorp Siza Water.
