With the rate of new coronavirus infections dropping across the country over the last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a number of changes in an address to the nation last night in a bid to rejuvenate South Africa’ embattled economy.

The ban on booze sales has been lifted following pressure on Ramaphosa from the liquor industry in recent weeks.

The sale of alcohol for off-site consumption is now permitted, between Monday to Thursday, from 10am until 6pm.

Duty-free shops, registered wineries, wine farms, micro-breweries and micro-distilleries will be able to sell alcohol for off-site consumption during their normal licensed operating hours.

On-site consumption is permitted at registered outlets from 10am-10pm.

The ban on beach access has also been removed.

Ramaphosa and the National Coronavirus Command Council put the regulation in place last December as infections soared along the coast.

Beaches, dams, rivers and parks are now open but strict social distancing and health protocols must be adhered to.

The curfew has also been adjusted to 11pm to 4am.

That is a boost for the restaurant industry, with eateries now able to keep their doors open for a little bit longer.

Religious gatherings are also now allowed.
