Several ratepayers’ associations will meet with Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda.

It's to discuss the city’s plans to implement above-inflation increases for the 2024/25 financial year.

Kaunda last month suggested a 14% price hike for electricity, 14.9% for water and around 10% for refuse collection.

Ratepayers’ associations are outraged.

Ish Prahladh, who’s with the eThekwini Ratepayers and Residents Association says these price increases can’t be justified.

"We are saying that you can not put those increases because the billing system is totally wrong, the people can't afford the increase.

"As it is,  there are such huge bills and now these increases are going to cause more issued. The pensioners are suffering and these current increases must be stalled it cannot be put in place," says Prahladh.

Last week, the ERRA submitted a petition signed by 12 000 residents to the mayor’s office in objection to the proposed hikes.
