The Restaurant Association of South Africa (RASA) says the government needs to strike a balance between keeping people safe and protecting the rights of workers who need to earn a living.

The group’s legal representative, Ashton Naidoo says they’ve written a letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa with suggestions on how to lift the booze ban and allow sales in restaurants with liquor licenses.

Naidoo says the suspension has taken a toll on the industry.

He says food outlets shouldn’t have to suffer because of citizens who are unable to control themselves around alcohol.

"Instead of posting an antagonist approach to the government, we will try to work cooperatively with government first before we engage on any sort of litigation.

"We thought it best not to force that litigation but rather work with government to find a solution to have the restaurant industry reopen for the sale and distribution of alcohol," says Naidoo.
