Rape survivors welcome GBV desk support at police stations
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The Jes Foord Foundation says the introduction of dedicated desks at police stations to assist victims of gender-based violence - is a step in the right direction.

Jes Foord, who established the foundation, adds that for many rape survivors, like herself, sharing harrowing details of their ordeal with police for the first time - can be overwhelming and scary.
Police Minister, Bheki Cele announced this week that officers stationed at these desks would be specially trained to support victims of gender-based violence.

Foord, who was gang-raped in 2008, says it's important to offer people - going through immense trauma - emotional support.
"In the majority of the time, these people are arriving at the police station it's the first time they speaking about what has happened to them.
"Its a very sensitive thing to deal with so I think that these offices that will be based at these desks need to be properly trained on how to deal with a survivor."
