Rand remains stable despite technical recession

Financial analysts have been trying to make sense of South Africa's technical recession.

A senior economist says it's not all doom and gloom following the news that the country's economy contracted, in the last quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of this year. 

It's emerged the mining and agriculture sectors have been performing well due to the Summer rains that brought relief to some of the country's drought-stricken parts.  

Lullu Krugel says the rand's reaction to the recession wasn't dramatic.

She says its performance is driven by what's happening in the rest of world - but luckily for SA there's been some return on demand for resources. 

"That is the factor keeping the rand at it's current strong levels of just under R13. The fact that the demand for resources is there- that is very good news on the one area for us," she said.
