Ramaphosa: Access to water remains one of govt’s biggest challenges

President Cyril Ramaphosa has acknowledged that access to clean, running water has been one of the most challenging issues facing people across the country.

He says that in the last few years, the government's been working on water infrastructure projects to carry piped water to villages.

 

He delivered his reply to the State of the Nation debate at Cape Town City Hall on Thursday.

 

"Wherever one goes, through the length and the breadth of the country, you find people who raise the issue of water that had always relied on streams, rivers and boreholes." 

 

Ramaphosa's remarks came ahead of a visit today by Water Minister Senzo Mchunu to residents living through a supply crisis in Phoenix and Verulam.

eThekwini's northern areas have been seriously affected for months. 

 

It's after the city's infrastructure was damaged during heavy rains and floods. 

 

Residents took to the streets last month, demanding an end to their water woes.

 

The city then promised to have its supply restored by mid-February but admitted this week that it won't be able to meet the deadline.
