Ramaphosa suspends Mkhwebane with immediate effect
Updated | By Newswatch
Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has been suspended with immediate effect.
Mkhwebane is facing an impeachment inquiry in Parliament.
She's gone various legal routes to try and stop the proceedings but has failed.
Her fitness to hold office has been called into question.
In a statement released on Thursday afternoon, the Presidency said President Cyril Ramaphosa gave Mkhwebane enough time to make submissions.
"In considering each element of the public protector’s submissions carefully, the president has taken into account the nature of the Public Protector’s office and his own Constitutional obligations."

It says she will remain suspended until the National Assembly has completed the process for her removal.
The Presidency says Deputy Public Protector will step into the role in Mkhwebane's absence.
"President Ramaphosa and Advocate Mkhwebane are both obligated to act in the best interest of the country, in compliance with the Constitution and mindful of the need to protect all constitutional institutions.
"The president’s decision to suspend Advocate Mkhwebane is the best manner to fulfill these obligations."
