Ramaphosa summoned over Marikana shooting

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has instructed his lawyers to challenge the action being taken against him over the Marikana massacre.

Ramaphosa yesterday told the National Assembly that he's been served a summons in his personal capacity arising from the events at Lonmin mine in August 2012.
''As a consequence of that, and on the basis of legal advise that I have sought and obtained, I have informed the secretary of cabinet that it will not be appropriate for me to get involved in processes that I have refereed to that the president is busy with, to find an alternative dispute resolve in mechanism,'' he said.
In a statement last night, his office confirmed the legal action, saying it maintains the view that the findings of the Farlam Commission remain clear regarding Ramaphosa.
The commission, which probed 44 deaths at Marikana during labour unrest absolved Ramaphosa and other members of cabinet of any wrongdoing.
The Deputy President was a director at Lonmin at the time of the tragedy.
