President Cyril Ramaphosa has lashed out at the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) for what he has labelled as personal attacks on the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra).

Ramaphosa's remarks come in the wake of the red beret's march to the regulatory body's headquarters in Tshwane on Friday.

The EFF wants Sahpra to approve Covid-19 vaccines from Russia and China.

The march drew a reported estimated of 2 000 EFF supporters in the country's capital, in contravention with the maximum people allowed at a gathering at that time.

"When political leaders launch personal attacks against the professionals who know their craft and have been well trained and well regarded all over the world, they are attacked for doing their job. The job that we as a nation have assigned to them," said Ramaphosa.

"Sahpra must be allowed to do its job without any hindrance or political influence so that when vaccines are approved in line with the procedure that everyone follows, the public can be confident that the vaccines are safe and of good quality and are the types that will work for the people of South Africa."

The EFF has criticised Sahpra for its perceived lack of independence and accused it of succumbing to political pressure.

It also demanded the resignation of chairperson Helen Rees and has threatened to march to her home if the party's demands are not met.
