Ramaphosa seeks judicial review of Public Protector report

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he will be taking the Public Protector's BOSASA donation report on judicial review.

He described the report as fundamentally and irretrievably flawed.

Ramphosa made the announcement at the Union Buildings last night.  Busisiwe Mkhwebane released a report on Friday following a probe into a BOSASA donation to Ramaphosa's ANC presidential campaign.

She found that Ramaphosa deliberately misled Parliament when asked about the R500 000 donation.

Ramaphosa says given the gravity of the matter, it's essential for the courts to make an independent finding.

"I have decided to take this action not out of disrespect for the Public Protector as a crucial institution of our democracy but in the expectation that the institution will ultimately be strengthened by an independent and impartial judicial review," he said.

The President says he respects the Office of the Public Protector.

"My decision to seek judicial review of this report should by no means be seen as a comment on the person who occupies the office, the competence or motives of the Public Protector. This is motivated instead by a determination that the law should be applied correctly and consistently," he said.
