Ramaphosa says local municipalities remain under-resourced
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
President Cyril Ramaphosa says a large number of the country's municipalities don't have the means to respond adequately to the needs of residents.

He was speaking at the South African Local Government Association's national members assembly in Durban earlier.
"Our municipalities do the best that they can. They try as hard as they possibly can but we must admit - many of them do not have the means to address the needs of our people," Ramaphosa said.
Ramaphosa says a long-term approach is needed to turn struggling municipalities around.
"It is never going to be one-day event where everything happens at one go and everything is 'hunky-dory'. As a country, we look to the national members assembly to provide guidance, wisdom on the approach that we need to take to ensure local government is capable of effectively fulfilling it's development plan," he said.

The president adds that the vision of his administration is to fundamentally improve the spaces where people live and work.
