Ramaphosa in 'really difficult position' - analyst

A political analyst says it's clear Cyril Ramaphosa is leading the ANC in one of its most difficult periods since 1994.

Imraan Buccus has been commenting on the party's election manifesto outlined in Durban at the weekend.

"The fact that his focus is on land and unemployment comes as no surprise. One has to bear in mind that Ramaphosa is in a really difficult position. On the one hand, he has to reconcile the populism coming from the left of the ANC with the aspirations of investors and other South Africans," he says.

Buccus says it was important that Ramaphosa spoke about unemployment.

"It's particularly important that Ramaphosa addresses youth unemployment. Masses of young people in this country are unemployed and not only does it affect the base of our social strata but unemployment also affects the stability of the country as a whole, so middle-class people - who would otherwise prosper - are affected by unemployment," he says.

He says land needs to be discussed in a responsible way,

"The fact that he focuses on land makes it clear that he has to pander to the aspirations of the left".
