Ramaphosa told a share ownership conference in Johannesburg on Tuesday that such plans are essential for creating a more robust economy that benefits everyone fairly.

"Today in our country more than half a million workers are part owners of the companies they work for. Workers don't even demand that we want all of it. They just say we want a portion."

He says in addition to promoting equality of opportunity and correcting historical injustices, these investments can also help boosting growth and productivity.

Ramaphosa added that worker share ownership gives them a seat at the table where important decisions are made.

"For the most part, workers who worked for those companies that produce orange juice, pizza were often excluded. They were almost like objects, not even heeded expect for the wages that they earn even in the boardroom."
