Ramaphosa defends recognition of King Misuzulu

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s lawyers have argued that his recognition of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini as the AmaZulu monarch was a ratification of the royal family's decision, and not his alone.

Ramaphosa is challenging an earlier High Court decision which set aside the official recognition of King Misuzulu as King of the Zulu nation.

The High Court ruled in favour of Misuzulu's older brother, Prince Simakade, after he contended that the 2022 identification process by the president was flawed.

Advocate Marumo Moerane, representing the president, addressed the justices in the Supreme Court of Appeal on Wednesday.

" The president also had before him a letter dated the 5th of August, 2021, from the premier of KwaZulu-Natal, which confirmed that the royal family had met and nominated His Majesty King Misuzulu Zulu, and that there was an objection, led by Princess Thembi and Prince Simakade."
