President Cyril
Ramaphosa says the country's National Coronavirus Command Council will meet to
discuss the new variant detected in South Africa.
The XBB.1.5 subvariant, detected by the University of Stellenbosch Network for Genomics Surveillance on Saturday, is said to be the most transmissible to date.
"We are meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) morning and thereafter at the meeting we will receive a report from the Department of Health as well as the scientists to tell us what this is about,” Ramaphosa told the media on Monday.
He spoke to the media at the ANC's Luthuli House headquarters in Johannesburg.

The president said they are watching what is unfolding in our country and what is unfolding globally as well.
"We have decided that we need to be agile and proactive and look at this as soon as we can. There will be an announcement tomorrow, but I've said there is no reason for South Africans to panic."
