R71 million allocated for Zulu King

The Office of the Premier has allocated R71 million to King Goodwill Zwelithini's royal household.

The funds, which are an increase of almost R5 million from last years' R66.7 million are to be used for the King's traditional and cultural events and will fund logistical support and maintenance of the Royal Palaces. 


"We'll also be focusing on Zulu Royal House Trust to ensure it is capacitated to a point where it can regenerate revenue so that it supports funding of the Royal Household. 


"For this year there will be upgrades and repairs as well as maintenance in eight Royal Palaces."


"The King Support and Royal House unit will continue to partake in various important national ceremonies and traditional functions of the province.

"These include the opening of the Provincial Legislature, opening of the Traditional House, hosting various cultural events such as the Reed Dance, Amaganu ceremonies, Umkhosi woMama, etc."


Premier Sihle Zikalala presented his office's budget vote at the Provincial Legislature. 


Over R800 million has been set aside for the 2020/21 financial year. 


Zikalala says the COVID-19 pandemic's affected the provincial and national economy. 


"This is a historical moment that calls on all patriots to be seized with the question of reconstruction and the development of our province and our country post-COVID-19."
