R34 in northern KZN a no-go area following protest action
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
KwaZulu-Natal authorities say the situation is still tense on the R34 between Vryheid and Ulundi, where protests erupted yesterday.

Two people were shot and wounded during the demonstrations. What remains unclear is where the shots were fired from.
The police's Thulani Zwane says the matter is under investigation.
Zwane says locals burnt down a building that belonged to the Department of Transport.
"Four suspects were arrested for robbery as well as malicious damage to property. While they were protesting, it is alleged that they removed the guard rails and used them to block the road."
"They also took property from a truck that was driving past in the area. They are due to appear in the Babanango Magistrate's Court facing these charges," confirmed Zwane.

Zwane has this advice for motorists travelling through the area.
"We are also appealing to motorists that they must please avoid using the R34 between Vryheid and Ulundi because vehicles might get damaged by these protesters," Zwane said.
