R2K marches on MTN on World Press Freedom day
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
The Right2Know campaign is marking World Press Freedom day by marching to the MTN headquarters in Durban.
R2K KwaZulu Natal Convener Precious Mazibuko says the march to MTN is part of their right to communicate campaign.
"Like we did with Vodacom last year, we want to ask MTN to cut down the cost of data and SMS'es and allow South Africans to communicate the way that they need to," says Mazibuko.
Mazibuko says although much has been achieved with regards to freedom of the press in South Africa, there is still more that needs to be done to realise media freedom.
"Civil society needs to join journalists to assist them trying to open up spaces for the media that allow journalists to get to the real stories that South Africans are talking about. In 2017, journalists still get harassed and intimidated by police and security personnel for simply doing their jobs. South Africans can also own the national broadcaster and not allow individuals to corrode it," she says.
