R2K calls for protection of SABC 8
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Right to Know Campaign says the attacks on some of the SABC journalists who were suspended and then reinstated for speaking out against censorship shows there's a crisis at the public broadcaster.
The campaign is calling on police to protect the eight journalists following reports that some have received death threats and their homes ransacked.
Earlier this week, the SABC 8 said they were still determined to go ahead with a Constitutional Court case probing possible censorship at the broadcaster.
The journalists were initially dismissed for speaking out against alleged censorship at the SABC.
They took the matter to court and the dismissals were found to be unlawful and their reinstatement was ordered.
The campaign's Busi Mtabane says this shows an abuse of power by those in leadership.
"This is sort of a mafia, political way if you speak out - you get threatened. This is a [case] we have seen before where individuals are being attacked for speaking against those in power," he said.
