R1.5bn drugs seized in KZN since October

National police say a team comprising of senior
police, the Hawks and Crime Intelligence are currently in Brazil.

National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, says they've seized drugs with a street value of more than R1.5 billion in KZN since October last year.
The majority of the drug busts took place at the province's ports on vessels coming from the South American country.
The largest consignment seized was at the Durban harbour, valued at R115 million in December, believed to have come from Brazil.
This week the Hawks confiscated drugs totaling R15 million aboard a ship from Columbia at the Richards Bay Port.

Masemola says the trend of drugs coming from South American is a problem, but they are working with their counterparts to fight the scourge.
"They are in Brazil on exchange of information and to tighten relations so that we can know what is happening within this ocean between us, so that we can make sure whatever comes in we arrest it.
"Whether it's the drugs or alone or whether it's with people, we will arrest before it hits the streets."
