R100 million needed to repair damaged Ezemvelo fences
Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife says it needs about R100 million to fix the fences at some of the nature reserves to protect communities from wild animals.
The conservation authority says fences have been deliberately vandalised, damaged by communities and in some cases compromised by poor workmanship.
Last week three elephants that were among a group that wandered into a community near Hluhluwe-imFolozi Park were put down.

Ezemvelo Acting CEO Ntsikelelo Dlulane says the financial injection will help protect both communities and animals in 13 protected areas.
He says the biggest challenge that they have which always compromises their fences is the result of the human element.

"Which is why we need to start looking at ways to ensure that we put fences that are human-proof. Meaning, we should fences that might able to detect any encroachment that will take place."
"We want to discourage those that want to access our fences. Our biggest challenge is not necessarily the animals inside."
