The three girls and boy were delivered prematurely at 29 weeks last month, with their birth making history at the 54-year-old hospital.

The 30-year-old mother, who is a twin herself, says she had been expecting triplets, but got a surprise when the doctors told her during delivery that there was a fourth baby coming.

The infants who are still in intensive care at the hospital will only be discharged once they have all reached an ideal weight of 1,6kg each.

KZN Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane visited the the young mother in hospital on Friday.

"We came to congratulate the family, the Khumalo family and the Mpotshane family for the children that we delivered safely and considering that this process is not an easy process particularly for a hospital, the size of RK Khan," said Simelane.

Simelane said she's happy with the progress of the babies' health.

"This delivery carries certain challenges and certain risks, but the staff was able to navigate that particular process nicely and we are very happy with the process and we are very happy with their progress.”
