Put clients' interests first, advises Chief Justice Mogoeng

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has taken a swipe at lawyers who exploit people especially the uneducated to enrich themselves.

Mogoeng was the guest speaker at the 14th Victoria and Griffiths Mxenge Memorial Lecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Howard College Campus in Durban last night. 


His speech was followed by an awards ceremony recognising outstanding students in the Law Faculty.

Mogoeng said lawyers should follow the example set by Griffiths Mxenge. 


He says the anti-apartheid activist and lawyer advocated for human rights and never put himself first.


"We've heard of stories involving victims of Road Accident Fund, payment will be made in their name to the tune of R1 million and an ignorant, oppressed black South African will be given about R10 000 or R20 000 because of this much money they have never touched before. 


"A well over R900 000 will go to the attorney who has never been injured," he said.
