Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Pan South African Language Board says they just want sign language to be treated equally as other languages.
The board says this will help the the deaf community which has been struggling to access information and opportunities because of the gap.
The board was launching the South African Language Charter in Pretoria yesterday.
The charter aims to add sign language as a 12th official language. Cinga Gqabu says its time they take part in the country's freedom.
"We need to have support for the deaf community. Sign language is a beautiful language", he said.
"There are many deaf people born to hearing parents. So if it is the 12th official language thins would go much better", Gqabu said.
