Newswatch spent the morning at Lalelani Primary School in Ntshongweni in Durban, where hundreds of pupils braved the weather and walked to school for their first day back in the classroom.

Before the morning assembly gathering began, several kids were seen walking to school in the remote area, while some were accompanied by their parents, and others were dropped off by school transport to ensure they make it on time for their first day.

Teachers were also in attendance to ensure the pupils were correctly lined up. Grade 1 parents were allowed to join the assembly gathering to make sure the kids settled ahead of the new academic year.

The 2024 academic year commenced this morning at both coastal and inland schools

The school's acting principal, Mthokozisi Mzizi says they are ready to start the year despite some challenges

"The only thing that we find is that Departments, there are finances that we are waiting for."

"I think that's the only thing that disturbs us because we don't have anything  to clean our schools with."

KZN MEC for Education Mbali Frazer was also expected to visit Lalelani Primary School.

Learners sat down with Newswatch's Gcinokuhle Malinga:

"My name is Nqubeko Mabaso and I feel excited on my first day in grade 7 and I can't wait to meet my new friends and my classmates."
