Updated | By ECR Newswatch
One pupil has died and at least 40 others have been hurt after a bus had overturned on the N3, near Hilton, west of Durban.
Upon arrival, paramedics found a bus carrying school children lying on its side on the Westbound carriageway.
Two learners were found are in a critical condition.
ER24 says the bus overturned apparently after a tyre blowout.
Spokesperson, Russel Meiring says nearly fifty children were hurt, some of them seriously.
"One of the critically injured children has succumbed to his injuries after we treated him and provided him with several advanced life support interventions as well as CPR," he said.
Michaelhouse has confirmed on their official page that the hired bus was carrying four U16 soccer teams, and was travelling down Townhill near Pietermaritzburg.
It's not yet known which school the pupil is from. Traffic on the N3 has been affected in both directions. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area as the roadway is severely congested.
