Initial reports are that the protest was over electricity connection issues in the area for the last two days.

Protestors allegedly threw rocks, boulders and bricks at 11 vehicles, leaving four people hurt.

SAPS spokesperson, Thulani Zwane is urging anyone with information to come forward.

"A group of about 60 people were protesting, complaining about service delivery issues. We also [received reports] that they allegedly started to stone vehicles that were driving [through] the area. We are appealing to motorists to come forward and submit their statements so that the matter will be investigated," he said.

Meanwhile, IPSS Medical Rescue says four people whose vehicles were stoned were taken to hospital for further care.

Spokesperson Paul Herbst says injuries ranged from serious to moderate.

The protest forced the closure of the N2 freeway's north and southbound carriageways, as well as the Shakas Head bridge over the freeway, last night.

IPSS says community members had used burning tyres and debris to barricade the roads.

Several rock-throwing cases have been reported in the Greater Durban area in recent months.

Dropping rocks onto passing vehicles was thrust into the spotlight when two siblings died after a boulder smashed into the car they had been travelling in on the N2 near Ballito in December last year.
