Public servants to march in Durban as wage row sees PSA down tools

Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube's expected to receive a memorandum of grievances from the Public Service Bargaining Council in KZN later.

 Just over 235 000 public servants are set to down tools in a countrywide strike over pay. The Public Servants Association wants a 6.5% increase - the government's offer is 3%. 


The trade union expects some government services to be affected by the one-day work stoppage. These include operations at the departments of transport and home affairs. 


But Moses Mushi, who's with the Department of Public Service and Administration, says this shouldn't happen. He says employees are only allowed to protest during their lunch and tea breaks - in line with the picketing rules.

"The no work, no pay principle will apply to a public servants who is part of the strike action during working hours. Public servants who are working in essential services are not allowed to participate in any strike action

“We can confirm that the baseline increase of 3% will be paid into the bank accounts of public servants on the 17th November, retrospectively from 1 April 2022."
