The accusations relate to the appointment and payment of service providers for the refurbishment of the dilapidated uMzimkhulu Memorial Hall.

Mkhwebane met with officials this week.

No more money will be spent on the project - which's been put on hold - pending the outcome of the investigation. Mkhwebane's report is set to be released in December.

The Public Protector's meanwhile condemned the violence and the killing of local councillors which was alleged to be linked to the project.

After his death, a friend of Sindiso Magaqa, an Umzimkhulu councillor who was shot and killed this year, claimed that corruption was a problem in the municipality.

Police are investigating whether his killing was politically motivated.
