Public Protector to probe maladministration at RAF
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has confirmed that the Public Protector is investigating allegations of maladministration at the the Road Accident Fund (RAF).
Numsa's Irvin Jim says a senior investigator has been assigned to the case.
"The RAF needs to be sorted out so that it remains accountable and reliable to those of us on the roads," Jim says.
He adds that there is instability within the RAF, amid a worsening debt crisis.
Numsa members went on strike at the RAF in March, demanding better wages as well as to "highlight the chaotic working conditions" within the fund.
"The shambolic state of the RAF management is no secret. The agency has been technically insolvent. It is hugely indebted and its poor debt management has had a material impact on its ability to fulfill its basic mandate of paying out claims to road accident victims", Numsa says.
Numsa also submitted a memorandum to the Department of Transport in March asking for an investigation into allegations of mismanagement at the RAF.
"We have not ruled out the possibility of further strike action, if RAF continues to harass our members."
