Psych patient deaths: NFP proposes review of all MEC posts in govt

The NFP is calling for a review of all MEC posts across the country.
The comment follows the release of the report into the Life Esidimeni tragedy in Gauteng.
At least 94 mentally-ill patients died last year - after being moved from the Life Esidimeni Care Centre by the Gauteng Health Department and taken to 27 unlicensed NGOs in that province.

Qedani Mahlangu resigned as Health MEC on the eve of the damning report's release.
The NFP's Sabelo Sigudu says all MEC positions - irrespective of the portfolio and province - should be reviewed to make those occupying the posts have the necessary qualifications.

"People who have experience and who are experts in certain departments should be given a fair chance. It must not be considered only for those comrades of the ruling party - that is totally unacceptable. As a result, we are seeing very poor performances due to these cadre deployments," he said.
