Human Rights Institute compares Life Esidimeni tragedy to Marikana

The Human Rights Institute of South Africa has compared the Life Esidimeni scandal to the Marikana massacre, saying basic human rights were violated.
The Health Ombudsman, Professor Malegapuru Makgoba released a report on the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 94 mentally ill patients in Gauteng.
The patients were transferred from the facility to 27 NGOs that had been operating without proper licences.

The institute says government allowed the tragedy to happen.
The institute's Manathu Nkwana says officials did not take proper steps to ensure that the right to life is upheld.
