PSA wants SAHRC to probe water issues at KZN hospital

The Public Servants Association in KwaZulu-Natal has urged the Human Right Commission to probe the lack of water at Bethesda Hospital in the uMkhanyakude District.
The union, which represents some 230 000 public servants, claims the hospital has been without consistent water supply since 2018.
The union's provincial manager Mlungisi Ndlovu said the facility has been relying on water tankers, but this has proved insufficient for all employees and patients.
"We received a report that some of the nurses, doctors, staff, cleaners and security guards are unable to do their work because they relied on one water tank which cannot be able to supply the hospital on an ongoing basis," Ndlovu said.
Ndlovu said this has obviously had an impact on the level of care provided by the hospital.
"We call for human rights commissions to investigate and ensure that there is proper supply of water, so that the services can be able to continue. We will not allow a situation where our members work without water because it is the human right," said Ndlovu.
