They say the flats have been neglected for decades.

About 60 people, waving placards, picketed outside the Public Works Department in Mayville on Tuesday.

The organiser of the march, Desmond D'sa, says there are over 500 flats that haven't been rehabilitated.

"Pipes, sewage, taps, and roofs are leaking, and the department is doing nothing. The department office has no resources. We came here  when the premier was here, so we are also urging her because the MEC is not going either."

He says the Austerville Project Steering Committee was formed by the government in 2010.

He says the project was stopped several times, hindering the progress of maintaining the flats.

One resident, Kerwin Snyman, says he's lived in his home on Woodville Road his whole life.

He says they are at risk of illness.

"When it rains, the dampness comes through the walls as they are not plastered. Water and sanitation system smell that comes around our area - our children are getting sick. We are still under the old roofing. And do you know how soft those are?"
