Protest breaks out following Newlands fatal crash
Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
Protest action has erupted in Newlands East, north of Durban, where three teenage girls were killed after being struck by a taxi this morning.
The girls had been on their way to school when the vehicle ploughed into them. A fourth child who was knocked over survived and is receiving treatment in hospital.
A large crowd has gathered here this morning. They have blocked the intersection of Dumisani Makhaye Drive and the M21 with a number of tyres and set them alight.
It is understood that they want the driver of the taxi that was involved in the crash, who apparently fled afterwards, to be arrested.
The protestors are not letting cars through and they have been stoning some of the taxis that have been driving through the area this morning.

Public order police are on scene and they are monitoring the situation.
The community has now set the tyres in the road alight. They’re calling for justice & for the taxi driver - who we understand fled the scene - to be arrested. #NewlandsCrash @ECR_Newswatch pic.twitter.com/mGVDEz2DP4
