Thousands of
eThekwini ratepayers have objected to plans by the municipality to implement
hefty tariff hikes
Almost 11000 residents have signed a petition to reject the new tariffs.
If the council approves the increases, they will come into effect in July.
Among other things, eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda is proposing a 21.91% electricity tariff hike for households and businesses.

The DA's Yogis Govender says local ratepayers who've been signing their petition say the proposal is painfully unaffordable.
"Besides citing that the tariffs are unaffordable, the residents are also up in arms saying that they did not receive their money’s worth. They do not get the services they pay for, all around us services are collapsing and yet this municipality deems it fit to increase the electricity tariff to almost 3% beyond what Nersa has approved."
