Prof Mayosi "a brillant mind"
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
The Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Zweli Mkhize, says Professor Bongani Mayosi possessed “a brilliant mind, yet remained very friendly, warm and sociable due to his humble and extremely down to earth personality”.
The world renowned cardiologist died on Friday, reportedly as a result of suicide.
An alumnus of the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Mayosi was the Head of Department of Cardiology at Groote Schuur Hospital and the Dean in the Faculty of Health Sciences, at the University of Cape Town.
He received the Order of Mapungubwe in silver, for his contribution to scientific advancement and service to the nation.
“He was one of a rare breed of African physicians to have scaled the climax of this complex and highly technical specialist field of cardiology,” Mkhize has said in a statement issued this morning, “Professor Mayosi dedicated his talent, skills and his whole life to save the lives of others and trained many more in the art of healing, as a specialist and lecturer in internal medicine and cardiology”.
He says Mayosi represented “the best in black excellence” and was “the epitome of outstanding professionalism and world class medical care, that reflects the high standard in medical care that the world has come to accept from South African health workers”.
Mayosi is survived by his wife, Nonhlanhla, and his children.
