Police in Sawoti in the Umdoni Local Municipality opened an inquest docket after the 18-year-old was found dead at her KwaDumisa home.

It's suspected she could have fallen and got injured.

But the KZN Department of Social Development says there are suspicions someone could ha been involved.

Spokesperson Mhlabunzima Memela says according to the family and neighbours, the teenager's boyfriend was the last person seen entering her room.

"Reports indicate that the victim, a grade 12 learner at a local school who resided with her grandmother, had been enduring persistent abuse from the father of her child. Witnesses saw the 25-year-old man entering the victim's home, where she was heard crying out for help as she was assaulted and suffocated.

"Despite the arrival of individuals who responded to her distress calls, the victim's cries for help subsided as she struggled for breath, ultimately succumbing to her injuries.

"MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza extends heartfelt condolences to the deceased's family, her schoolmates and the community of KwaDumisa. She emphasises that the prevalence of gender-based violence in the province casts a dark shadow over communities."
