Probe into attempted escape of murder suspect at Durban court

A probe is underway after an awaiting trial prisoner attacked police officers and tried to escape at the Verulam Magistrate's Court in Durban.

Police say two officers were escorting five suspects from the court to the holding cells on Wednesday when the incident occurred.
They say one of them strangled one of the police officers before robbing him of his gun and firing shots.

Officers retaliated, wounding the 21-year-old murder and robbery suspect in the neck and head.
One police officer was shot in the hand.
The other escaped unharmed.
