Probe into death of disabled Durban boy
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
An investigation has
been launched into the death of a disabled Durban boy whose body was exhumed
from his home this week.
It's understood the 12-year-old child had been living with cerebral-palsy.
It's believed his family buried him in a shallow grave after he passed away at his KwaNdengezi home over the weekend after a short illness.
The National Department of Social Development says a community member told them about the child's body.
Deputy Minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu visited the family on Thursday, and the incident was confirmed.
A police search and rescue team was immediately called to exhume the body.
Bogopane-Zulu says the boy's stepmother told her they had decided to bury the child on the property due to a lack of finances.
"An inquest docket has in being investigated by KwaNdengezi SAPS," says KZN police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala.
"Yesterday [Thursday] at Coffee Farm in KwaNdengezi, a body of a 12-year-old boy was exhumed after being buried without informing the police. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated."
