Probe begins into Umbilo warehouse fire

eThekwini Fire says it is trying to establish the cause of a fire that ripped through a warehouse in Umbilo.

Berzacks Industrial Machinery and Consumables as well as three delivery trucks caught alight in the afternoon yesterday.
The double-storey building stores industrial sewing machines, large quantities of dye liquids and plastic buttons.
eThekwini’s Regional Divisional Commander Nqoro Nqabakazi says it took 15 crew members two hours to extinguish the blaze.

She says while they were tackling an inferno, explosions were heard nearby which may have caused the fire to spread.
"The roof collapsed which made things difficult to access the flames effectively. One section of the wall in the western side of the building has collapsed with some cracks evident in some parts of the building. The fire was brought under control at about 17h10. No persons were reported injured or missing because there was no one inside."
