Mayor Albert Mncwango says Nongoma is one of the areas hardest hit by the drought.

He says there has been little or no intervention by government.

"The national department made available to this province a sum of money part of the drought intervention programme by the government. But where is the money? Now, a year has gone by and we have not seen anything on the ground. What has happened to the money? Someone must tell us," he says.

Mncwango says action is needed.

"A lot of people lost their livestock. People do not have drinking water. The boreholes that were there have broken pumps and we would need that kind of intervention from the government," he said.

The KZN Department of Agriculture announced the probe last week.

It says any officials found to have pocketed some of the drought relief money or directed cash towards their own businesses will face the consequences.
