The KZN Department of Education says the principal of Tokotoko High School in Nongoma claims she had no prior knowledge about corporal punishment being carried out at her school.
MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane suspended the teacher with immediate effect yesterday after a video emerged of her hitting pupils with a metal pipe.

The pupils were apparently being punished for failing a test.
Education's Muzi Mahlambi says during their investigations they picked up that the principal may have been aware of offences.
''She played ignorant of knowledge of corporal punishment being administered in her school but there was a lot of contradiction between herself and the School Governing Body (SGB).
''The SGB did indicate that last year they had to intervene and come and speak to the school management, educators - educators apologised,'' he said.
