President Ramaphosa 'deeply disturbed' by student protests in country

President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his condolences to the family of a 35-year-old man who died during a student protest in Johannesburg.

 Mthokozisi Ntumba was shot, allegedly by police trying to disperse Wits University students in Braamfontein yesterday.


He'd been walking from the doctor when he got caught in the middle. 


Speaking in the National House of Traditional Leaders, Ramaphosa said things shouldn't have unfolded the way they did. 


"As much as they were protesting, the way I saw it on television did not warrant the type of resistance from our police, it disturbed me quite deeply." 


Ramaphosa says students will continue to be funded. "We will not abandon our students, We will fund their education. It is the right, funding education is an investment in the future of South Africa."

Earlier, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande promised to respond to concerns raised by student bodies. 


"I received communication from the South African Union of Students outlining a number of demands, I will respond as soon as I am able to do so. We are committed to engaging with student leadership as well as with other stakeholders."
