President Cyril Ramaphosa hopes for a ceasefire following ICJ ruling
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
President Cyril Ramaphosa says he hopes that yesterday's International Court of Justice interim ruling will pave the way for a declaration of a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.
"Negotiations should commence on a permanent two-state solution for enabling Israel and Palestine to live side by side as independent states. The Palestinians having attained their self-determination."
The UN's top court delivered a preliminary order forcing Israel to take all measures to prevent acts of genocide against the Palestinian people.
The ICJ ruled that Israel must also take immediate measures, to ensure the provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance to the people.
It's after SA dragged them to the court in The Hague accusing Israel of violating the UN Genocide Convention.

It's been reported that some 25,000 Palestinians have been killed in retaliation after Hamas militants attacked Israel, killing citizens and taking hostages.
Ramaphosa says the country will not waver in its commitment to the Palestinian people.
"Our painful history obliges us to do no less, we thank the International Court of Justice for upholding its role in achieving justice, promoting peace, preventing genocide and holding those responsible for genocide accountable. We hope and wish this court order paves the way to ending this crisis."
