Presidency: SSA vetting of SABC news head requested by broadcaster

President Cyril Ramaphosa's office says the vetting of SABC executives by the State Security Agency was requested by the public broadcaster.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya responded on Monday to reports by City Press that the SABC’s head of news, Moshoeshoe Monare, had been targeted for a second round of vetting.

The latest vetting comes two years after his appointment and ahead of the May elections.

"President Ramaphosa or any part of his administration will never sanction acts of intimidation or harassment of journalists, because such behavior will stand contrary to sacrosanct adherence to the bill of rights that are enshrined in our country’s constitution."

The reports follow leaked audio from an ANC NEC meeting in which President Cyril Ramaphosa could be heard complaining about the party's negative media coverage.
