Speaking at the party's Free State elective conference in Thaba Nchu yesterday he referred to the recent protests at the University of the Free State (UFS), University of the Cape Town (UCT) and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

Over the past week more than 40 UFS students were arrested. Maimane says the time has come for the report to be released and for students from impoverished backgrounds to have an access to quality education.

He adds that the party has also written to the president to release the report.

Meanwhile the Presidency's spokesperson, Bongani Nqulunga says the report into tertiary education fees is expected to be released soon.

"The Presidency is now finalising the processing of the report. This requires, among other things, that the Presidency consults with the relevant ministers to ensure that government is ready to implement the President's decision as soon as he releases the report. The consultation with various ministries is at an advanced stage. It is expected that it will be finalised during the course of next week," he says.
