The Health Department's issued a circular saying that women who've entered week 14 of their pregnancy can get inoculated.

Previously, pregnant and breastfeeding women were excluded from vaccination trials due to the lack of clinical data.

The department says only the Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson shots can be offered to those who are eligible.

Head of the South African Paediatric Association, Professor Mignon McCulloch, has welcomed the news.

"It was never really a concern. We know that the vaccine is safe, it's the same as other vaccines and obviously people are anxious about pregnant women and breastfeeding moms.

"But all the studies that have been done show that it is as safe as it is for anybody else. I think it is important for everyone to get vaccinated."
